  1. The design research is a research approach that focus on compreehending how students develop understanding about… something. To do that, it should start on a sound theoretical review about what has already been studied and, based on local theories, the researcher (or team of researchers) develop, or better, design a learning trajectory based on the initial conjecture. But, instead of stoping after “applying” the design trajectory in the classroom, it has different stages: first the researcher design the learning trajectory, then he/she collects the data, after that he/she analyses and reflect upon it, and then addapts the learning trajectory accordingly to the data collected in order to “follow” the students’ understanding development.
As a final result, based on theory already existing, new theory will be developed about the way students develop their understanding, and new materials will be available to others (but we have to have in mind that the learning trajectory and materials were developed considering specific students).

  2. Design research is a research methodology aimed at developing a hypothetical learning trajectory which then could contribute to a local instruction theory. It focuses on the learning process and has a cyclic process. Design research typically consists of three phases, namely preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. In the preliminary design phase, the researcher, together with the teacher, who will be involved in the research, also supervisor who can be the expert, design the learning materials included the learning trajectory. In this learning trajectory, conjecture of students’ thinking is predicted. The research could also try this learning material, consists of activities, to a small group of students which can be called as pilot study. Then, we come to the next phase namely teaching experiment. In this phase, the researcher try to apply the design in the “real” classroom situation. During the implementation, the researcher takes all data such as students’ work, video and audio recording, (probably) teacher’s and students’ reflections. In the phase of retrospective analysis, the researcher compares the actual learning happens in the teaching experiment with the hypothetical learning trajectory including compares the conjecture of students’ thinking. Besides, the researcher should link his/her findings with the theoretical framework underlies the research. Of course, there are probably some limitations are found during the research, therefore, design research is a refining research and it is more to qualitative research because it focuses on students’ thinking and learning process.

  3. Design research is one of approach in research methodology. Design research focus on learning process of material that we make through learning trajectory. There are 3 phases in design research. (1) preparation and design (2) teaching experiment (3) retrospective . analysis. In phase preparation and design , the following are taken: a literature review, the development of Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT). Researcher will try out HLT in the small group. In phase teaching experiment, we try out HLT in field / class room. The aim of teaching experiment is to generate more understanding of students thinking. In phase retrospective analysis, researcher and teacher will analysis the hypothesized learning, the assumptions about students learning are compare with the actual learning as observed during the lesson. So design research aims at understanding the process of learning and teaching.

  4. The focus of the design research should be the learning process. We want to design something to find a new theory and maybe get a new impression of the development in classes. Therefore we have to start with a research problem which is interesting for other people, too. It need to be based on literacy and methodology. But on the other hand it should be a creative process which includes reflection. The goal is to understand students learning.

  5. Design research is a research methodogy to design a study. It doesnot focus only outcome, but also process of students learning or understanding. It consists iterative process and stages through which researcher designs a practical approach to develop students understanding. In particular, lesson environment is embedded into learning trajectories. It requires mostly qualitative data to observe and explain how the process continues and what occurs in the process of learning. Design research doesnot provide generalizability of the findings of the study. In other words, it gives indept information about a particular goal or particular grou’p, or environments etc. For example, a teacher could design a lesson with dynamic environment to develop students udnerstanding of a particular concept during the process.

  6. Design research is a cyclical process with the aim of the following outcomes: new theory, teaching materials and publication. It is a process with different stages where the first stage is to define the problem and sample. After the first stage refinenent takes place. The research is conducted in the classroom and is sometimes limited because it is conducted in small scale studies and is therefore not always generalisable. It can sometimes be generalised to a local theory. After each stage reflection and data analysis takes place.

  7. DEsign research is an ongoing process in that we begin with our problems (like students cannot understand 3rd dimension). We decide what we can do with for our students.
We design a task/material/worksheets etc. Then Face it with our students. Then observe what they are doing while they are dealing with that task/material/worksheets. By looking at their worksheets we may understand their comprehensions OR we can propose another solution to our beginning problem. If we have a hypothesis (if we get a solution or suggested a solution) we can try to use it. We try to use our solution in the classroom and observe the students. If our solution works we Will be happy 🙂 If it dövesi not work, we may propose another solution. Then check it if it works or not. Then it goes on & on.

  8. Design research is a research with the design of a teaching-learning process using an authentic chemical modelling practice as a context for learning, learning. An authentic practice is defined as a homogeneous community of people working on real-world problems and/or societal issues characterised by three features: (1) shared content-related motives and purposes (to take on a certain issue), (2) a characteristic procedure (sequence of activities leading to an outcome) and (3) use of relevant scientific knowledge (needed for the issue at hand) (Bulte, Klaassen, Westbroek, Stolk, Prins et al., 2005).

  9. Design research is a research method with relevant for educational practice. The purpose of the design research is to develop research-based solutions for complex problems in educational practice. Starting point for design research are focus on learning process by prior research and review of relevant literature, researchers in collaboration with practitioners design and develop learning trajectory workable through by carefully studying with cyclic process in target contexts of learning, in doing so they reflect on their research process with the purpose to produce design principles.

  10. This is Nadias’ definition: it was on the wrong place 🙂
Design research is a cyclic process starting from a research problem going deeply every time through analysis of collected data according to some chosen methodology. It’s expected to use existing theories and previous studies to come out with something not only new but effective to the scientific community.

  11. Csannaa definition (it was in the wrong place 🙂 )
The aim of DR is to develop teaching materials, applications for learning. In the beginning we have a main problem, a question or something, we want to develop about the understanding, learning, processes of students.
    First step: we find it.
Second step: We find out, what others think about it.
Third step: We create a hypothesis and the stages of the research.
    4th step: We do it.
5th step: We write the publications and we are happy.
6th step: We realize, that this isn’t good –> so we found a problem –> let’s go back to the first step!

  12. Christo definition: The aim of DR is to design something with a practical application, focused on the learning processes, through an iterative process. Based on local theory, you implement the instrument (what you think will have the desired outcome) and observe/collect data (mostly qualitative). Evaluate the effect and refine the instrument, then implement again.
